Iroagalachi Henry Chinenye: My Camp Experience

Please tell us your name: My name is Iroagalachi Henry Chinenye

How did you hear about CAA/Who introduced you to CAA?

I stumbled on CAA on a Twitter post that was retweeted to my TL by Felix Adeoye around May of 2020. It was in the middle of the pandemic lockdown when everything got overly familiar and my world became a cocoon.

Was this your first CAA camp?
December 2020 camp was my first CAA experience

What was the highlight of this camp for you?

About highlight, I had numerous highlights as every day was a peak of experience higher than the previous day asides from the departure day.

• From my arrival to camp in Ibadan at 1 am in the morning to receiving breakfast from someone I was meeting for the first time (Moyo, an amazing guy) that was so awesome as I felt the warmth in his kind gesture.
• Our arrival at Erin Ijesa at about 4:43 pm on a Sunday afternoon after an amazing bus ride with amazing people whom I had barely met at the dawn of the same day. It was filled with cruises, cheers, and hearty laughs. I was welcomed to a calm, serene environment mixed with a beautiful view of mountains surrounding us and clean air in the atmosphere.
• While unpacking and trying to settle at our campsite I looked forward to what an interesting week I was about to step into with an open mind; exactly how Alice felt before stepping into Wonderland. I was curious too.
• To the seamless manner dinner we had while having our first introduction & orientation session
• The teamwork and spirit.
• The bonfire night; I tagged it the famous BonFire Night anchored by Monija with the Megaphone. Lol! The sparks from the huge fire were beautiful to view as the breeze of the night kept them whirling around the flames. It rained showers of flames on those who dared go close to the heat. Bangers kept the atmosphere banging while bonfire songs never ceased to keep the morale high.
• The beauty of nature at night convinced me that sleeping under ceilings was a complete bore!
• Climbing the mountain with my heavy backpack and other bags (water and filming gear) was the peak of this fun experience. I literally cried while I was meant to be having fun in a fun-filled environment because it was the first time I’d be stretched so thin. It was a true test of physical, mental, spiritual strength as I couldn’t give up.
• The temporary relief at the beautiful Erin Ijesha waterfall experience ( a waterfall on the mountain).
• The interactive session on the peak of the summit. The incredible view of mountains standing at the edge of each other was definitely a different type of high.
• After taking 17,248steps (32.4km the whole day) we ascended Obake, a surprising destination. A community that lies on a mountain 12km above sea level. The journey was tiring, stressful but nonetheless, amazing!

Based on your camp experience will you be inviting anyone to attend with you next time?

With my experience, I would be able to convince a friend to come with me next time.

Any word for fellow volunteers or anyone hoping to become a volunteer?

Look for what you can do to further the cause and not how the cause will further you.
