Volunteer Experience

Daniel Olatunji : My Camp Experience

My Experience

My name is Daniel Olatunji and even though I don’t have the right words to describe my summer camp experience, I will try my best. It was characterized with a lot of uncertainty at first because that was my first Camp Adventure. It was also the first time I would be going hiking. All I can really say is that the experience was really  mind-blowing and worth the while. From the point of arrival to the point of departure, there were a whole lot of fun activities and experiences of life; beyond the usual that would really move anyone per se.

Coming all the way from Lagos to make an impact in people’s life in Osun and Ekiti was kind of unfathomable for me because in my head, I was like “What exactly is the whole point?” To be very honest, If I was to have an opportunity to go again, I’d choose to go a thousand times. Imagine waking up to nature without toxicity of a busy city.  Not the one that you’ll wake up with traffic horn or with your neighbors noisy generator or with heat as a result of power outage, but actually waking up properly, how humans are meant to wake.  The environment coupled with the people in it was amazing. The people were extremely hospitable. Osun people are so sweet!

On our way to the first venue at Ekiti I was baffled at the extent people would go just to show LOVE♥️ AND LIGHT💡 to people they aren’t related to. There was no space in the bus and I was lapped 😐 they lapped me from Ibadan to Ekiti 😓 odidi Ibadan😆. When we got to our Location I was tired and just wanted to eat and sleep.
Climbing the mountain have been something I never dreamt of on my life Because I am scared of height. I climbed the famous Erin Ijesha waterfall/ mountain at night oooh God you need to experience that☺️. (I use that experience whenever am feeling discouraged. If I can ascend and descend Olomirin I can do anything💪) Oooh Lord my Father, Chisos pls dont complain of cold if you haven’t been to Obake 🥶 ooooh Lordy Lordy (small Lagos cold you are saying weather for two) hmmmmm Obake cold is weather for all o(if you don’t know you don’t know 👌🏿). …….

The prayers she uttered after we gave her the pair of slippers remains a blessing forever. No matter how small it is, it means a whole lot to someone out there.

In a remote village, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the number of people living in huts in this century. When it was time to teach them how to make Nigerian Jollof, I was shocked to see how the people gathered willingly to learn. They were so clueless about the ingredients and process involved in making the delicacy.

A whole lot of mind blowing experiences that really redefined what volunteering meant to me.

There are thousands of people out there in need of basics; Books, shoes, clothes, affection, time, love, care, food items, etc are very much valuable.

Your presence is a blessing to someone out there. It means a lot. The willingness to go out there and live life with people in need would go a long way. The ability to make impact in people’s life means alot. No matter how small.

This is what I learnt from my last camp experience.
