Strengthening youth engagement for Sustainable Peace in Africa
Africa remains the world’s youngest continent with a median age of 19.7 years. From time immemorial, the position and role of the African youth in the socio-economic and political development of the continent has been that of a prime mover. This is because the youths constitute the crust of the future generation and are perceived as a vital instrument in repositioning the continent’s economy. Even though the patriotic commitment to nation-building is the responsibility of all citizens, the more energetic and purpose-driven youths always stand at the center stage. If properly channeled and fully exploited, the innate potentials of the youths can be transformed as a means of development for Africa.
In Nigeria, where ethnic and religious violence and instability has embroiled parts of Africa’s most populous country, Camp Adventure Africa is engaging young leaders to promote and strengthen peace through cultural exchanges, tourism, volunteering, community service activities, inter-ethnic and inter-faith dialogue. We believe the innovativeness and creativeness of young people in these areas could be mobilized effectively by connecting them with wider peacebuilding objectives, such as building bridges between divided communities and ensuring a viable process of reconciliation.
Our Summer Outreach seeks to further engage youths in peacebuilding efforts among communities, the initiative will involve diverse youths to creatively express themselves, providing the basis for discourse. These efforts are to foster mutual trust and an attitude of coexistence among young people from different backgrounds, and also open a space for greater dialogue about their role in sustaining peace at the local level.
One of our key outreach aims is to counter extremism, which weaponizes religion as epitomized by Boko Haram, which has devastated parts of northeastern Nigeria. The objective is to encourage religious tolerance and counter ethnic polarization by providing mutual understanding.
We thereby encourage young leaders who are passionate about the Global Goals and Peacebuilding in Africa to participate and be part of the positive change-makers.
